VIDI X DORS/CLUC Dev Challenge

VIDI X DORS/CLUC Dev Challenge

Hi everyone, we have some great news for you! VIDI-TO d.o.o., in collaboration with the DORS/CLUC conference, is organizing a Dev Challenge!

The goal of this challenge is to encourage the development of open-source mini projects for the VIDI X microcontroller that are educational, interactive, and engaging for students, learners, and hobbyists. These projects are intended to serve as tools for learning and exploring computer science through hands-on work with microcontrollers like VIDI X, using CircuitPython and/or C++.

Who can apply?

  • Registered participants of the DORS/CLUC conference (required for application).
    • When applying for the Dev Challenge, please use the same email address and full name you used when purchasing your DORS/CLUC conference ticket.
  • Developers
  • Students
  • Teachers and professors
  • Members of the makers/hackers community

Project criteria:

  1. Open-source (published on GitHub under an OSI-compliant license)
  2. Fully functional on the VIDI X microcontroller (ESP32)
  3. Developed in CircuitPython and/or C++
  4. Educational value – teaches users the basics of electronics, programming, algorithms, etc.
  5. Easy to reproduce – uses readily available components (already integrated into VIDI X or commonly available ones like Arduino, micro:bit, or connected to existing educational systems like robotic arms, drones, USVs, UAVs, etc.)
  6. Interactivity and creativity – the project should have an interesting application, with a focus on education

Examples of potential projects for inspiration:

  • Digital weather station with Wi-Fi synchronization
  • Smart quiz for learning languages or mathematics
  • Memory or reflex game with LED lights and buttons
  • Mini measurement device (e.g., temperature sensor, air quality sensor)
  • Control of robotic arms, vehicles, boats, or drones for educational purposes
  • Educational chatbot
  • Traffic light simulator for learning programming loops

Prizes:

1st place: 500 € + VIDI X Kit + project promotion + VIDI subscription

2nd place: 300 € + VIDI X Kit + VIDI subscription

3rd place: 150 € + VIDI X Kit + VIDI subscription

Special Audience Prize: Online voting – VIDI X device, WhiteShark backpack, and VIDI X t-shirt

How to apply and submit your project:

  1. Register with the DORS/CLUC organizer as a registered conference attendee to participate in the VIDI X Challenge and borrow a VIDI X device from the organizer (the number of devices available for borrowing is limited), if you do not already own one.
  2. A brief description of the submitted project and its purpose (up to 500 words), along with the complete project, must be submitted no later than May 17, 2025.
  3. Link to the GitHub repository
  4. A short demo video (up to 3 minutes)
  5. List of components used

Deadlines:

  • Opening of the competition: May 9, 2025
  • Closing of applications/project submissions: May 19, 2025 (by midnight)
  • Announcement of winners: May 23, 2025
